With BOTTA DESIGN’S New UNO24 Watch, Single-Hand Timepieces Evolve Yet Again

Botta Design UNO 24

Botta Design UNO 24

BOTTA DESIGN, of Konigstein, Germany, is well known for their one-hand watch designs, and they have just launched yet another variation of the award-winning Botta UNO watch. Called the UNO 24, it follows in the footsteps of the UNO, the UNO Automatik and the Solus. Already, this watch is taking the United States by storm and it is expected to see strong consumer interest in Canada as well. It is the only watch that combines a one-hand design with a 24-hour function.

The UNO 24 approaches time in an unorthodox manner. It presents the entire day at a glance in a precise analogue graphic form. The single hand completes one full rotation during the course of each 24-hour period. This means each time of day is indicated by a precise position of the hand on the special scale, such that even a fleeting glance is sufficient to show the wearer instantly and clearly how far the day has already advanced.

An interesting feature is the delicate line that marks the point of transition from one day to the next. The moment the watch hand crosses this line, the date jumps forward to show the new day.

The positioning of the watch hand on the dial corresponds to the position of the sun in the sky. The precise scaling means that the time of day is shown with an accuracy of within ten minutes, which is sufficient for most people.

At just US$380 MSRP, the affordable yet stylish UNO 24 comes in black-and-orange or white-and-grey, with either a genuine vegetable tanned leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet. Other features of the UNO 24 are:
Diameter: 40 mm
Thickness: 6.8 mm
Weight: 38 g (leather strap), 80 g (steel strap)
Movement: RONDA 515 24H Swiss-made
Case material: stainless steel
Glass Type: sapphire glass
Water Resistance: 3 ATM

Rufus Lin Designs is the Vancouver-based sole importer for Botta watches in Canada and the USA. Chief designer Rufus Lin says: “The Germans have a knack for combining high functionality with minimalist elegance. It is one of the finest timepieces in our 2009 collection, yet it is affordably priced.”

Designer Klaus Botta points out that “things become clearer when you reduce them to their bare essentials”, a concept that adds more than it takes away in the design appeal of the watch.

Botta Design is a traditional family-run workshop located just outside the Black Forest in Germany. It produces only a limited number of watches annually. Rufus Lin Designs specializes in the import and distribution of fine watches from selected independent European watchmakers, and is the sole distributor in North America for Botta watches.

As a graphic designer, I'm fascinated by the crossroads between technology and aesthetics. Horology is one of these crafts, where art and engineering come together to produce mechanical wonders that grace the eye. WatchPaper was born from the desire to create an online tool where I can share my passion for watches.
