Yvan Arpa is setting the watchmaking planet on fire with the VOLNATOMIC, an explosive collection in which traditional Swiss watchmaking embodied through a self-winding movement, a Large Date Dubois Dépraz calibre and Concepto tourbillon play with the concept of forbidden territory and nuclear danger by adopting the famous black and yellow color codes.

Warning: not for sensitive souls!

Code diversion, creative irony and ostentatious provocation: Yvan Arpa is once again exploring forbidden territory. After lightning, rust and dust, all classic enemies of watchmaking, he is displaying the yellow and black colors seared into the collective consciousness as symbolizing danger and embodying a warning signal.

Nuclear technology, an explosive subject with strong negative connotations, is looking for enthusiasts, connoisseurs or initiates prepared to make light of threats and advocating atomic energy as epitomizing the very essence of matter.

VolnaTomic Crime Scene

The toxic skull atomic symbol and emergency exit signs appear on a black and yellow dial framed by a bezel with a striped pattern composed of either alternating matte or polished black finishes or by alternating colors, according to the Crime Scene, Radioactive and Atomic Central models.

The figurative elements on the watch, such as the warning triangle, the skull or the atomic propeller blade serve an aesthetic role as well as conveying a cleverly diverted symbolism.

According to Yvan Arpa, “the use of irony via diverted codes is typical of contemporary art and in certain offbeat circles, but never in watchmaking.”

VOLNATOMIC appeals to natural “transgressors”, drawing them into dangerous and forbidden zones in order to escape from a day-to-day, conventional and well-defined universe.

VolnaTomic Radioactive

The partnership between the watchmaker and Miller began in November 2008 and in December 2009 Hublot debuted the “Bode Bang” limited edition watch designed by Bode together with the Hublot design team.

Miller visited the manufacturer’s facility and was fascinated by the know-how and meticulousness of the watchmakers and he set out to craft his own watch. His meeting with Jean-Claude Biver, the CEO of Hublot, led to an immediate mutual understanding. Both passionate, direct men with an expressive and unconventional manner of speech, they quickly found a host of shared values.

The talented, feisty and determined skier, and the inventive, exceptionally energetic boss both demonstrate great generosity through their involvement in supporting humanitarian causes. The creation of the Bode Bang is the fruit of this bond. Together, they decided to divert some of the watch’s royalties to the Turtle Ridge Foundation, founded by Bode Miller and his family in 2005 (www.turtleridgefoundation.org) to support those less fortunate in life, an ambition equally dear to Jean-Claude Biver.

Following the great success of its first Extreme Tourbillon Regulator Manufacture – the Full Black version – at Baselworld in 2009, ALPINA Genève is proud to present two new models in gold, both issued in an extremely limited series of just 18 numbered pieces.

These new versions, both as astonishing as the first, feature a “Full Black” dial and a caliber consisting of 188 parts, equipped with a Silicium Escapement Wheel and the latest development: a Silicium lever.

After three years of Research and Development, the experts at ALPINA Genève, Swiss manufacturer of high quality sports watches, were ready to present the brand new, inhouse automatic Manufacture Tourbillon Regulator movement. A team of specialist designers, engineers and watchmakers worked hand-in-hand to revive ALPINA as a true Manufacture. Supported by the latest in high-precision equipment and driven by a passion for innovation.
Based on the award-winning Manufacture Regulator caliber, ALPINA Genève developed its own Manufactured Tourbillon Regulator: the AL-980, completely
conceived within its workshops in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva. A unique movement that presents several specific, innovative features: Silicium Escapement Wheel and Silicium lever, Smart Weight Balancing™, fast oscillation at 28’800 BpH and an individually numbered Tourbillon cage.

ALPINA Genève Extreme Tourbillon Regulator Manufacture

The specific and technical designs of these new Extreme Tourbillon Regulator Manufacture models capitalize on the strong brand philosophy of ALPINA: highest level of accuracy, extremely high readability, shock resistance, sturdiness and reliability. The timepiece, with a bold case diameter of 48 mm, is crafted from either titanium with a pink gold bezel, or pink gold with a black ceramic bezel. The matt black dial features finely brushed steel ALPINA Double-Digit indexes. The iconic ‘Extreme’ design elements remain, and have been coupled with a more elaborate dial design: satin-brushed touches of black in the center of the “Regulator” sub-dial, skeletonized hands in black brushed steel, unique and originally decorated bridges in the Tourbillon cage and a black PVD signature ALPINA oscillating weight, visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

The Tourbillon is one of the most valued and sought-after complications by collectors and aficionados of premium timepieces alike. A Tourbillon mechanism is extremely complex to manufacture due to the required accuracy of all the parts involved. It requires highly qualified and experienced watchmakers to be able to manufacture the ALPINA Tourbillon caliber. By combining technical complexities with the sports characteristics that contribute to the charm of this timepiece, ALPINA presents undoubtedly one of its most extreme creations in history…

17 January 2010 – Today in Geneva, Hublot’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver, side by side with Ernesto Bertarelli, the president of Alinghi, unveiled the chronograph sporting the colours of the Swiss Defender of the 33rd America’s Cup.

Swiss Made expertise was the toast of the hour this evening on the shores of Lake Geneva, as the exclusive, limited edition Hublot “King Power Alinghi” watch made its debut. The pride of the participants was swelled by immense motivation felt on all sides to defend the Swiss colours together in a few weeks’ time, when Alinghi and Oracle do battle on the water.

The King Power Alinghi echoes the expertise and precision of the Defender yacht built for the America’s Cup. New developments, cutting edge technology and materials, a focus on the excellence of resources and sharing the highest level of skills are qualities which link the two companies.

Jean-Claude Biver hopes that the King Power will bring the catamaran luck in this extraordinary challenge: “Alinghi already has an enormous range of skills and qualities, as well as the motivation to win, and we wish to demonstrate to them how proud we are to be their partner and to show them our support through this chronograph in the yacht’s colours!”.

An exceptional timepiece for the 50th anniversary of an iconic collection

For half a century the Admiral’s Cup collection has paid tribute to marine and sea enthusiasts. To celebrate this legendary model’s fiftieth anniversary, Corum has chosen to associate to this eminently sporty watch with an exceptional movement combining two of the most prestigious horological complications: The tourbillon and the minute repeater.

The use of a minute repeater in a watch with marine connotation is not a common feature, however this complication concentrates the strength of two universes, as life on a boat is governed by night and day with ringing bells. From ‘action stations’ in the morning to the evening ring, and even during attention to colors, it is a sailor’s life that is punctuated by these ringing tones. Integrating a minute repeater in an Admiral’s Cup is therefore a way for Corum to pay tribute to the universal connection to this iconic watch.

Another way to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary with great dignity is to propose a new horological achievement: the CO 010 caliber. The development and adjustment of this exceptional movement took two entire years for which Corum required the participation of a dozen of its best watch-making craftsmen.

Each of the components were conceived and developed to guarantee the precision and beauty of the tone by considering its « power » (expressed in decibels), its « precision» (note correctness), its richness (expressed in number of partials) and its «reverberation » (duration of each note). The minutes-rack, placed at the heart of the ringing mechanism, is inverted compared to traditional minute repeaters in order to bring strength and precision to each note. It has also been enlarged to permit a wider lift angle to each tooth, extending the time between notes. The racks hitting the gongs are made out of ultra resistant and hardened steel. Fixed to these racks, countersprings have been specially conceived to find the best balance of the hitting strength and speed.

During the ringing, the rhythm is regulated through the rotation of an inertial flywheel, visible on the movement’s back. The gongs, manufactured from an alloy featuring a composition and thermal treatment that are a closely guarded secret, have been adjusted to strike the hours with an A note and minutes with a C sharp note. These two notes have not been chosen randomly, their specific sequence forms a major third (two tones) with a more cheerful harmony than a minor third (one and a half tones). The precision of the whole mechanism is guaranteed through a Tourbillon with Silicium escapement and pallets offering reliability and durability.

Visible complexity

The result of these intense years of craftsmanship is a micromechanical masterpiece of 14¼’’’ – with a diameter of 32 mm – and a thickness of only 5.35 mm, which ensures a hand-wound power reserve of 72 hours. The finishing was also the object of attention: each surface has been finished by hand; circular-grained components, black polished steels – in particular the strike-hammers and Tourbillon Bridge – circular-grained decoration of the plate and Côtes de Genève finish of the bottom bridges.

The creativity and care which have prevailed over the conception of the caliber CO 010 are again found in the external design of this Admiral’s Cup Minute Repeater Tourbillon 45. In order to specifically highlight the movement behind it, Corum replaced the dial with a smoked PVD treated sapphire glass allowing the wearer to admire the extreme complexity of the minute repeater and Tourbillon mechanisms. Its grey colored treatment, outlined with monochromatic nautical flags on the fitted flange, confers elegant sobriety to this timepiece. On that same sapphire glass engraved in golden writing are «Corum », « Minute Repeater » and « Tourbillon » as well as golden index chevrons and minute numbers. The 45 mm diameter case in 18kt red gold is immediately recognizable thanks to its legendary polished and satin finished twelve-sided bezel.

Ingenious winding

This jubilee model has a bezel containing a hidden winding function. For such a sporty model it was indeed too risky to have the minute repeater’s push-piece extending out which might get caught and potentially damage the mechanism. The Admiral’s Cup Minute Repeater Tourbillon 45 has therefore been manufactured with a specific bezel which winds the minute repeater function by rotating the bezel 27 degrees clockwise. Keeping the pureness of the case line and the integrity of the ringing mechanism, this ingenious system offers water-resistance up to 3 atm. Knowing that more than 140 hours are necessary for a Master Watch-Maker to assemble the movement’s 319 components, with an additional 10 hours to ensure perfect sound and notes, there is no need to specify that this Admiral’s Cup Minute Repeater Tourbillon 45 will be manufactured in very small quantities: only ten pieces will be produced in our workshops through the end of 2010.

The adventures of the 21st century are based on the progress that has been made in technology and the ideas, that will extend the frontiers of humanity from land to air to the last final step, outer space.

The established Swiss brand FORTIS, well versed in the history of aeronautics and space travel, uses its knowledge for developing precise chronographs for pilots, cosmonauts and astronauts. As the supplier of numerous professional flight squadrons and as the manufacturer of the official watches of the Russian space program, FORTIS keeps constantly in touch with pilots and space travelers. This strong contact allows FORTIS to constantly test the watches in the most extreme conditions, and has enriched the creative work of the company as well as gaining experience and knowledge that can be incorporated into new timepieces.

The functionally designed, PVD black coated steel watch case topped by a double coated sapphire crystal, has a diameter of 42-millimeters whereas the mat black dial and the contrasting white dial design finely characterize the B-42 FLIEGER BLACK collection. The white luminous hands and hour markers ensure clarity and good legibility, even under diffused light. The glass case back allows inside view into the mechanics of the automatic movements and the C.O.S.C. tested FORTIS chronograph alarm calibre F2001-5 reveals the fascination of a unique micro mechanical masterpiece, one of a kind.

The side view of the B-42 collection shows its characteristic elements: screwed attachment lugs, protected push buttons, and a proportionally sized and easily accessible crown embossed with the FORTIS crown logo. All models are available with a sporty strap made of high-quality rubber with folding clasp, with a padded black leather strap with contrast stitching or with an elegant Louisiana crocodile leather strap, whereas both of them can be featured with an alternate butterfly folding clasp instead of the standard buckle.

15 French jewellery, high jewellery and watch companies will take part at the “International Jewellery Tokyo” and “Tokyo International Watch Fair” to be held from 27th to 30th January 2010 in Tokyo Big Sight:

11 precious jewellery and high jewellery manufacturers, stone and pearl dealers on the French Pavilion, in the “International” Section,
2 costume and fashion jewellery manufacturers in the “Fashion & Costume Jewellery” Zone,
1 men’s jewellery manufacturer located in the “Men’s Jewellery” Zone,
1 watch manufacturer exhibiting in the “Watch” Section (Tokyo International Watch Fair).

The major trends are:

For Jewellery and High Jewellery

The trend is towards softness with rounded shapes in jewellery-high jewellery (links, disks, waves, metal or crystal balls, pearls), with lightness and transparency effects (open-worked jewellery, lace patterns, links, filigree). Large designs are seen alongside extra-dainty pieces.

Plays on contrasts (matt-shiny, polished-satin or sand finish), oppositions of materials, mixtures of colours and materials are very important.

The white metal and diamonds combination retains many fans but gold comes in lots of different colours too: yellow and, above all, pink as well as, more recently, green gold. Gemstones in a variety of shapes – cabochon, facetted, twisted, briolettes, pyramids, pears – choose shades of pastel or harmonized colours or, on the contrary, combinations of bright colours. Red, in every shade, from pale pink to deep violet, is amongst the star colours this season, with a special mention for rubies, which are being rejuvenated. Pearls and mother of pearl, particularly black, are also very fashionable.

Tie-necklaces, long and fine-chain necklaces set with a variety of patterns or beads made from different materials, chains with pendants or charms as well as multi-link necklaces made from chain of different sizes, colours and shapes are particularly highlighted.

Rings are opulent: wide engraved rings, big central stones surrounded by ribbons set with diamonds, precious or semi-precious gems, large solid or open-worked settings, decorated with gem-set patterns….

Simple shank, wide or narrow link chains decorated with charms, several rows of small chains, wide rigid cuffs engraved or richly set with gems, bracelets come in a wide range of designs.

Long and hanging, hoops, studs and sleepers, earrings come in a variety of styles too.

Men’s jewellery is also the object of particular attention with ranges ceaselessly renewed in terms of designs that are adapted to or inspired by their passions. Cufflinks are back, in more modern style.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-1949" title="PIERRE LANNIER - PL 9 - Elegant ladies timepiece with sparkling stones decorated case. All stainless steel. Water-resistant 3ATM.

For Watches

For city wear, evening wear, sports or leisure time, watches come in highly varied styles, adapted to each activity.

In cases, the round shape is popular along with the square or rectangle and, to a lesser extent, barrel, oval and even side shifted shapes. Dials are calming down, displaying only hour-symbols, figures or finely decorated with narrow stripes, discreet patterns.

New finish techniques (PVD, IP) soften the total black look which is still a major theme (case, strap and dial), using touches of colour. Black is also combined with white (steel, lacquer, ….) whilst gold plating, gold (yellow and, above all, pink) and silvered metal are enjoying renewed success.

Diamonds, gemstones or synthetic gems remain fashionable set onto cases, dials and straps.

Leather, skin or synthetic straps are making a big comeback. Metal design are varied in terms of style or shape, adorned with a variety of patterns and sometimes combined with leather.

Men’s watches come in extra-wide sizes, sometimes oversize and in dark colours, mainly black. Chronographs, automatic, multi-function models or with complications are very popular. Urban-chic style is seeing renewed success with ultra-flat, sober and elegant designs.

For ladies, the fashion is for designs more adapted to feminine wrists, in delicate, elegant lines: metallic case-strap sets come with links or bows, rigid reeds, thin straps ors multi-lace watchstraps, cuff-watches finely decorated with a variety of patterns (flowers, butterflies, …), jewel-watches. In addition to black, which is also fashionable, black and white, white and pastel shades are in the majority.

For Costume and Fashion Jewellery

Highly graphic, the collections celebrate nature and all its riches. Simple shapes highlight the radiant white mother-of-pearl with its many different shades, focusing on its iridescence. It is associated with Japanese pearls, palm wood, glass or amazonite in ingenious settings where the mother-of-pearl plays on the sober lines themselves highlighted by clever transparency, shades of blue and radiant reflections.

Fun and feminine, the models are marked by bright, coloured animal themes (farm animals, multicoloured birds) and various takes on everyday objects to create timeless jewellery associating pewter, coloured resin, natural stones and Swarovksi strass…

The oldest Automobile club in the world is opening it s doors to the Swiss watchmaking company Hublot for the first partnership in its history .
Hugues de Rouret and Jean-Claude Biver are explaining the reasons which encouraged them to join forces in Paris today . The main fruit of this alliance will be the creat ion of a watch in the AFC colours, a percentage of the royalt ies from which will be donated to the Fondat ion ICM (Inst itute for Cerebral and Medullary Disorders).

Since its very beginnings in 1895, this members’ club has brought together pioneers, inventors and entrepreneurs driven by the development potential the automobile can offer, both in terms of technological advances and the notions of freedom and fantasy that it represents. These gentlemen drivers have never formed a partnership with a major brand name, until now. Under the aegis of their management company (S.G.A.C.F.), they have accepted this challenge.

Hublot’s CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, a trailblazing, impassioned entrepreneur, was captivated by the potential synergies between his watchmaking brand and the Club Automobile. These synergies do not just relate to the values that they share: a respect for tradition, expertise, technological advances, but also, and above all, they provide an opportunity to support the Fondation ICM (Institute for Cerebral and Medullary Disorders), one of the founding members of which is none other than Jean Todt, a distinguished name in the automotive world, member of the ACF, and President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile … which is headquartered at the Automobile Club de France!

Jean-Claude Biver, along with Hublot, has always been involved in projects to support and champion disadvantaged children. Today, through this first association with the ACF, he is lending his support to the ICM project. This international research centre was set up to prevent, treat and compensate for the consequences of spinal cord injuries caused by sports and road accidents, and to find treatments for brain pathologies (www.icminstitute.org).

Hublot has created a limited edition men’s and women’s watch, a “drive” chronograph in the ACF colours. A black ceramic case and bezel surround the skeleton dial which reveals a section of the movement. A contribution from each watch sold will be donated to the fundamental and clinical research carried out by the ICM.

Two aviation legends; one watch

To commemorate the life of the legendary Hawker Hunter jet, top Swiss pilot’s watchmaker Oris, introduces the latest model in its aviation collection.

The awesome Hunter took the world by storm when it first flew in the UK in 1951. Seven years later it came to Switzerland and became a linchpin of the Swiss Air Force. Although the Hunter has since been retired in Switzerland it continues to fly thanks to the Swiss Hunter Team of the ‘Fliegermuseum Altenrhein’, a unique group of former Swiss Air Force pilots who were inspired to fly by the Hunter. The Oris Swiss Hunter Team Limited Edition reflects both the strength of the jet and the quality of its design.
The 46mm anthracite PVD coated case projects an elegant silhouette with its gentle curves, bevelled top ring and oversized screw down crown. The dial is presented in the unmistakable Oris style of a cockpit flight instrument. The tiny Hunter jet on the pointer calendar hand is another nod to the inspiration for this limited edition pilot’s watch.

Oris movement 644 is the quality engine at the heart of this mighty craft, and it is clearly visible through the glass case back. Marked with the logo of the Swiss Hunter Team the case back also shows Oris’ support for the men who continue to keep the magnificent Hunter flying.

The Oris Swiss Hunter Team Limited Edition is presented in a magnificent box set, which includes an original Hunter ejection seat safety splint key ring. Marked with the same limited edition number as the watch it accompanies from 0001/1958 to 1958/1958 (the year the Hunter first came to Switzerland) it helps to make the set an essential collector’s item for all aviation enthusiasts.
