It only takes a glance to recognize the 1960s. This extraordinary period’s unmistakable look and feel lives on in the movies and the music, architecture and design we still admire today. German design from the 1960s reflects the era and stands apart in a world of its own, stylish in a retro-modern way, elegant and independent. An authentic tribute to the spirit of the times, Glashütte Original’s Senator Sixties Panorama Date celebrates the most exciting and intriguing decade of the 20th century.

The Senator Sixties Panorama Date combines unparalleled excellence in traditional mechanical watch making with a superbly evocative ‘vintage sixties’ design. Striking and stylish at once, the distinctive details and layout of the dial evoke the characteristic look of the nineteen sixties. The domed, galvanized black dial gives pride of place to the panorama date display and features exquisitely stylized silver Arabic numerals at hours 3, 6, 9 and 12, subtly complemented by a fine black minute ring. Gently arching, white gold hour, minute and seconds hands and diamond-cut hour markers enhance the simple elegance of the design.

The shaped sapphire crystal case back first seen on the Senator Sixties models is a feature of the Senator Sixties Panorama Date as well, enabling a clear view of the Caliber 39-47 automatic movement and its oscillating weight, crafted in 21-carat gold. The polished stainless steel case and a finely-worked black Louisiana Alligator leather strap complete this superb 20th-century vintage design.

The Senator Sixties Panorama Date is available with a galvanized black or satin-finished silver dial. The black-dial version features silver Arabic numerals, white gold baton hour, minute and seconds hands and diamond-cut hour markers; the date is presented in white numerals on a black ground. The satin-finished silver model presents black Arabic numerals, rose gold hands, diamond-cut hour markers and the date in black on white.

A statement of principle: less is more. Minimalism. Modern design. Function takes on form, and color is transformed into a subtle range of grays. The PanoMaticLunar XL. The quintessential understatement.

The PanoMaticLunar XL presents the classic lines and look of the PanoMatic XL models in an understated, eloquent form. Set within the galvanized matt gray dial are the characteristic off-center hour/minute and subsidiary seconds dials, finely milled and galvanized in the same dark gray hue. The elegant moon phase display presents a shining silver moon and stars against a fine-grained silver sky.

Applied white gold Arabic numerals indicating hour 12 are framed by white gold hour markers and white gold hour, minute and seconds hands. Enhancing the minimalist design is the visually compelling panorama date display, whose white numerals on a dark gray ground present the date without the need for a double window. The 42mm stainless steel case offers both polished and satin-finished surfaces and is held securely in place by a finely-worked gray alligator strap.

At the heart of the new PanoMaticLunar XL is the Caliber 90-02 automatic movement. Its finely finished elements, the three-quarter plate, swan-neck fine adjustment, Glashütte ribbing and sunburst decoration, characteristic of the fine art of mechanical watch making at Glashütte Original, are clearly visible through a sapphire crystal case back.

The rediscovery of a way of life

Elegant, handmade pocket watches have always been a symbol of style and sophistication. Worn on a chain, the first pocket watches were admired in the 16th century as masterpieces of watchmaking technology and miniaturization. For the first time, the portable watch made it possible for people to carry the exact time around with them, “on hand”, as it were. Over the centuries, artistically finished pocket watches made of gold were both a status symbol and a useful everyday object. Particularly as a fashion accessory for men, the pocket watch was the expression of a way of life that attached importance to using a precious timepiece to read the time.

With the launch of the Glashütte Original Pocket Watch No. 1, the established manufactory harkens back to this epoch and presents a timelessly elegant pocket watch with quarter-hour repetition, which comes in a worldwide limited edition of 25 pieces. This timepiece in rose gold captivates with its high standard of watchmaking, its innovative construction and aesthetic design. A historical watch by Julius Assmann, a famous pioneer of the Glashütte watchmaking industry, served as the model.

One particularly striking feature of this watch is the quarter-hour repetition, which announces the quarter hours and hours acoustically. Using one tone, the repetition first of all indicates the previous hours, and then, by means of a second and higher tone, the quarter hours which have elapsed since the full hour.

To operate the repetition, a slide is located on the case at 6 o’clock. This is moved by hand in the direction of 9 o’clock, thereby tightening the mainspring. When the final point of the winding has been reached the signal mechanism is activated automatically. The progress of the signal mechanism is regulated by a centrifugal governor visible on the wheel train side. The beating of the two hammers is made audible by means of two gongs of different lengths, which are passed around the piece beneath the wheel train.

Two blued steel hands dominate the dial: the slender minute hand and the hour hand in classic “poire” form turn on the central axis, while the second hand is located underneath the polished eye in a sub-dial area. The classic display is enclosed by a minute ring which, along with the black Roman numerals, stands out in clear contrast to the enamelled dial.

The watch is wound via the crown and the time is set using a two-level yoke winding mechanism. This is designed so that at the moment of winding the crown, the balance wheel is halted and the eccentric second hand jumps to “zero”.

The newly designed hand-wound calibre 84-01 from Glashütte Original permits a precise time display. A doubly non-reflecting sapphire crystal protects the calibre and gives an unobstructed view of the exquisitely decorated piece. With three quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, hand-engraved balance cock and swan-neck fine adjustment, it is a high point of the art of Glashütte watchmaking. This elegant timepiece has a power reserve of 36 hours.

Two hinged lids of polished rose gold protect the watch on both sides, with the name of the watch as well as the serial numbering from 1 to 25 artistically engraved by hand on the bottom of the rear lid. Worn on a robust chain of rose gold in a special waistcoat pocket, the new Glashütte Original Pocket Watch No. 1 is set to become a luxury accessory for today’s refined gentleman.

This special model will be available as of April 2010 when it will be officially presented during BASELWORLD 2010 (18 – 25 March).

The design of the Glashütte Original Senator Sixties collection clearly reflects the joie de vivre of the 1960s. Above all, the aesthetic attitudes of this era found their expression in geometric forms, which were used as stylistic elements in the fields of art, fashion, and design.

The squared cushion shape was a popular design form in the 1960s, inspiring the creative heads at Glashütte Original to design the recent Senator Sixties Square Chronograph. The distinctive edges of the stainless steel case provide the perfect frame for its elegant dial, creating a fluid transition from the round center of time to the angular design of the case. The convex sapphire crystal, antireflective on both sides, gives an unobstructed view of the domed dial.

Domed, skeletonized hands glide harmoniously across the satin-finished background of the dial, featuring diamond-cut hour markers fitted with typical SuperLumiNova dots and an extravagant numeral font reflecting designs typical of those years. The 42 mm case provides a perfect frame for the balanced dial upon which Glashütte Original’s designers have also positioned the totalizers at 3 and 9 o’clock. With the aid of rounded buttons located on the side of the case, the wearer can easily operate the start, stop, and reset functions of this stylish chronograph.

Glashütte Original Senator Sixties Square Chronograph

The shaped sapphire crystal first used on the Senator Sixties models is naturally also present on the Senator Sixties Square Chronograph. It provides not only a sensational view of automatic manufacture Caliber 39-34 with its with typical Glashütte design features such as the three-quarter plate, swan-neck fine adjustment, Glashütte ribbing and double sunburst decoration, but also allows a rare side view of its revolving 21-karat gold rotor.

The retro look of the Senator Sixties Square Chronograph is also apparent in the fine Louisiana alligator skin strap. The stainless steel model is available in two versions: a classic and harmonious combination of silver-colored dial with rose-gold hands and appliqués and a timeless black variation set off by silver-colored hands and markers.

Glashütte Original stands for a living, authentic factory, high exclusivity, traditional watchmaking since 1845, exclusive mechanical masterpieces, and
“Handmade in Germany.”

Glashütte, April 2009 – Whether they are simple or complicated, all watches by A. Lange & Söhne are made according to the same high quality standards and display the same degree of flawless craftsmanship. One of them is the new 1815, which was presented at this year’s Geneva Watch Salon SIHH – a simple three-dial watch made in the best Lange tradition that will be available soon.

More than 60 highly qualified Lange employees – called finishers – focus exclusively on the finishes of parts made in Lange’s own workshops. They are proficient in all finishing techniques for metal surfaces, even some that had already been forgotten. When the brand was re-established in the 1990s, these techniques were painstakingly recreated, in order to instruct new team members. It takes a qualified watchmaker at least two years to master all cuts and polishes.

The flat polish on the escape wheel and escape wheel plate of the 1815, for example. The finisher creates the mirror finish by rubbing the part on special foils treated with a layer of diamond dust. In order to produce an absolutely flawless flat polish, the part is mounted on a small disc of elder pith and slid across the foils in a figure-eight movement. The finisher uses three foils with increasingly fine grains, down to just 0.5 micrometres. At first glance, it looks easy. But even the most talented finisher needs at least six months of practice before he or she has mastered the flat polish with consistent results. In addition, each step requires the utmost cleanliness. A single speck of dust is enough to ruin the work of several hours.

The New 1815 from A. Lange & Söhne detail

Chamfering is another example. The outer edges of the three-quarter plate in German silver are broken at an angle of 45 degrees and polished with paste and a rotating wooden disc. Lange tested dozens of different materials to find that limewood is the perfect carrier for the polishing paste if the part is made from German silver. Another challenge for the steady hand of the finisher: The chamfer must be exactly 0.2 millimetres wide along the entire length of the edge. Even the edges of the smallest openings, such as the one for the winding spring, are finished with this complex technique.

Many other finishing techniques, such as circular graining, band ribbing, linear finish, sunray finish, and perlage, are combined in the movement of the 1815, turning it into a small work of art. The result is an aesthetic composition of different material colours and textures. Polished surfaces and edges create beautiful reflections that can also be viewed through the sapphire crystal back, warming the heart of any true watch aficionado.

The main design consideration for the Sport Evolution Impact line presented last year was to create optimal protection for the movement, which would also allow for unrestricted use in terms of sports. Four shock-absorbing elements crafted in elastomer absorb 60 percent of the force of an impact or other external influences. The shock-absorption system provides optimum reliability and rate precision even under the most demanding conditions. Joining the Sport Evolution Impact Chronograph and the 100-piece limited-edition Sport Evolution Impact Tourbillon is yet another strikingly functional and sporty companion: the Sport Evolution Impact Panorama Date. The 46 mm stainless steel case of this robust timekeeper is coated with matt black rubber which, although it does not provide additional protection for the watch, adds a certain flair and aids in creating a harmonious overall design.

The generously sized Glashütte Original panorama date clearly stands out from the black background at 6 o’clock. This patented function of the Saxon watch manufactory comprises a small disk containing the numerals 0 to 3 in the center of another disk printed with the numerals 0 to 9. This arrangement has the advantage that both disk surfaces are placed on one level, avoiding a “step” in the date display. For this reason, the date window does not need a mullion.

Glashütte Original shock-absorption system

The course of the individual hours is shown by polished silver hour markers. The markers are inlaid with SuperLumiNova to guarantee improved legibility, and the centrally positioned sweep hands provide information on the hour and minute, the visuals of which are also strengthened by luminous substance. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal case back provides a clear view of automatic manufacture Caliber 39-47 beating the timepiece’s rhythm. Thanks to a power reserve of 40 hours (+/- 10%), this functional timekeeper provides reliable service regardless of the wearer’s sporting pleasure.

The powerful design of the Sport Evolution Impact Panorama Date continues in the straps and bracelets it can be attached to. This striking timepiece is available on a rubber strap, a woven Trieste strap, or a specially designed stainless steel bracelet. The flawlessly crafted four-link metal bracelet fits the wrist circumference of its wearer perfectly. Adjusting the individual length of the bracelet using the patented, innovative closing and adjusting mechanism designed just for Glashütte Original is easy. The integrated double G logo functions as both the clasp’s button and the activator for the fine adjustment mechanism, which can be adjusted a total of eight millimeters in eight steps, making it supremely comfortable. The elements are screwed to one another with no room for interplay between them so that they are much more stable than links joined by pins. The double security mechanism with two buttons on either side hinders an accidental opening of the clasp.

Glashütte Original represents a living, authentic manufactory, high exclusivity, traditional watchmaking since 1845, exclusive mechanical masterpieces, and “handmade in Germany.”

Press release, Basel 2009 – Just in time for Baselworld 2009, Glashütte Original presents the next model in its successful line of pilot’s watches: the Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar. This high-flying timepiece soars with a robust 44 mm stainless steel case in typical pilot’s watch look, sporting a traditional matt black dial with large Arabic numerals and line markers for the minute and second displays as well as blued hour and minute hands. The added perpetual calendar functions have been seamlessly integrated into the dynamic design of this efficient timepiece.

The disks for both day and month and the typical Glashütte panorama date are displayed in white on a black background resulting in a visually clear and balanced dial. Nothing gets in the way of the dial’s legibility at night either; the hour numerals, and the blued hour, minute, and second hands are inlaid with the luminescent material SuperLumiNova. The Double G logo guarantees a counterbalance on the tip of the second hand.

In order to do justice to the dynamic character of the timepiece, designers at Glashütte Original decided to create a leap year display using a hand at 12 o’clock: when it points to the red L, it is currently a leap year. In addition to a perfectly legible dial, rate precision is vital in a pilot’s watch. Inside the Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar, automatic manufacture Caliber 100-07 guarantees this precision.

Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar © Glashütte Original

Automatic manufacture Caliber 100-07 commands a power reserve of more than 55 hours (+/- 10%) and sports a reset mechanism that allows for easy synchronization of the second hand with a time standard. Unlike other reset mechanisms, the second hand here is neither connected to the winding stem nor the crown. As a result, when the crown is pulled out the balance remains in oscillation and the movement continues to run, significantly reducing material stress. The reset mechanism is activated by pressing a separate button on the side of the case at 8 o’clock.

A soft, used-look calfskin strap with stainless steel buckle provides the perfect finish to the pilot look of the Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar.

Glashütte Original represents a living, authentic manufactory, high exclusivity, traditional watchmaking since 1845, exclusive mechanical masterpieces, and “handmade in Germany.”

Its satin-finished, polished links take their cue from the feminine curves of the case, allowing the sporty timepiece to emerge as a perfectly formed whole.

The 38 mm polished stainless steel case is framed by a bezel ringed with 54 TW-if brilliant-cut diamonds (total weight approx. 1.17 ct), adding a touch of luxury to the Lady Serenade Chronograph. The sunburst decoration creates magnificently lustrous reflections on the black galvanized dial. Polished Roman numerals mark the 12 and 6 o’clock positions on the dial, while applied stainless steel markers illustrate the divisions of the other hours. Shining silver threads surround the minute counter at 9 o’clock and the running subsidiary seconds at 3 o’clock, highlighting them clearly on the dial. The crown is consciously playful, embellished as it is with a brilliant-cut diamond.

The scratch proof sapphire crystal case back allows an unobstructed view of the inner workings of this light and airy chronograph. Manufacture Caliber 39-34, with a power reserve of 40 hours, ensures precise time measurement. Outfitted with all the traditional elements belonging to Glashütte’s art of watchmaking such as a swan-neck fine adjustment, a three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing and double sunburst decorations, this movement once again reveals the depth of Glashütte Original’s horological know-how.

The Lady Serenade Collection was unveiled by the Glashütte Original manufactory in 2007. In creating the collection, designers wanted to capture the sensitivity of women and enter into their emotional world. Model variations of these new timepieces are expressions of feminine elegance that match any wardrobe: from casual and sporty through formal business dress and all the way to stylish eveningwear.

Press release, Basel 2009 – A classically elegant masterpiece is the latest result of the long-time collaboration between the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory and the Glashütte Original watch manufactory. Two world-famous Saxon inventions unite in the Senator Meissen Tourbillon: Meissen porcelain and the flying tourbillon.

The latter is an invention by Alfred Helwig from 1920, who served as an instructor at the German School of Watchmaking in Glashütte. The balance, pallet lever, and escape wheel are housed in a cantilevered carriage that turns 360° once a minute, thus neutralizing rate deviations of the balance due to gravity. The subsidiary seconds display is attached to the carriage of the flying tourbillon and is framed by a polished gold second scale for added clarity.

The Senator Meissen Tourbillon is a picture of stylish classicism in its 40 mm rose gold case, outfitted with exquisite technology. The passing of time is measured by traditionally blued hour and minute hands that glide across the surface of the wafer-thin, white Meissen porcelain dial. The hours are marked by hand-painted Roman numerals that are painstakingly applied to the dial and require the utmost skill from the Meissen factory’s script painters. The Glashütte Original lettering and the crossed swords that are the trademark of the Meissen porcelain manufactory are also hand painted. The painting of the dial alone requires eight hours to complete.

Another significant challenge is posed by milling the cutaway needed to observe the flying tourbillon at the 6 o’clock position on the extremely thin porcelain dial—a process necessitating long years of accumulated knowledge at the Meissen manufactory in dealing with the porcelain’s unique qualities.

The Senator Meissen Tourbillon is powered by the exquisitely finished automatic manufacture Caliber 94-11, which can be admired through the antireflective sapphire crystal back of the rose gold case. The 48-hour power reserve makes for easy handling, efficiently meeting the needs of the modern wearer. The Louisiana alligator skin strap and folding clasp, attached to the case by integrated lugs, ensures a comfortable and secure fit.

Glashütte Original represents a living, authentic manufactory, high exclusivity, traditional watchmaking since 1845, exclusive mechanical masterpieces, and “handmade in Germany.”

Background information on the creation of the Meissen porcelain dial:
The ceramic properties of porcelain’s brilliant, pure white surface paired with exquisite painting allow a dial of extraordinary aesthetic quality to be created. Production begins with the formation of a disk from liquid porcelain that is fired at 1400°C. Ensuing processing ensures that the exacting dimension specifications for a Glashütte Original watch are upheld.

Each individual disk is subject to strict quality control, and only hand-selected disks are painted. The Roman numerals are painted by expert script painters using the finest of brushes. Colored porcelain glazes are applied in two coats, and each coat is fired at 900°C in order to achieve the desired color intensity. When finished, the piece undergoes a final firing.
