This year again, for the 14th time, on October 31st, the cream of the watchmaking world will get together to reward the horological creations of the year.

Every autumn, watch collectors, enthusiasts, retailers, the press and pretty much everyone who cares about watches will follow with great excitement the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), to find out who are the great winners of the year.

Last year, we posted the list of winners of the XIIIth edition, where the top prize, the Grand Prix “Aiguille d’Or” was awarded to Girard-Perregaux for the Constant Escapement L.M watch.

This year, no less than 24 people recognized for their exceptional contribution to the watchmaking sector – such as master-watchmaker and Swiss design genius, Philippe Dufour – have been brought together by the Foundation of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève to make up the 2014 jury, under the stewardship of its president, Aurel Bacs. The other members of the jury are mostly members of the media, collectors, bloggers and retailers, you can find the whole list here.

Watch brands interested to participate, had till the 23rd of June to submit their entries in one of twelve categories:

  • Ladies’ (with maximum two complications)
  • Ladies’ High Mech (ladies’ pieces that don’t fit the first category)
  • Men’s
  • Chronograph
  • Tourbillon
  • Calendar
  • Striking
  • Mechanical Exception
  • “Petit Aiguille” (for watches under CHF 8,000)
  • Sports
  • Jewellery
  • Artistic Craft

The competition is open to all watchmaking brands, irrespective of nationality. Only watches launched on the market after March 2013 and before the end of November 2014 are eligible to enter the competition.

WatchPaper’s GPHG

While GPHG, did not made public this year’s entries, I’ll invite you to take part in the fun and nominate a watch in any of or for all the categories that you think deserves to be a winner. Do so, by leaving a comment on this post, on the WatchPaper Facebook page, tweet it at @WatchPaper, or leave a comment on Canwatchco.ca.

Every watch that receives your nomination, will be featured in a story on this website and we’ll continue the fun by choosing a winner among the entries.

As a graphic designer, I'm fascinated by the crossroads between technology and aesthetics. Horology is one of these crafts, where art and engineering come together to produce mechanical wonders that grace the eye. WatchPaper was born from the desire to create an online tool where I can share my passion for watches.
